What does Jesus mean that "Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled and whoever humbles himself will be exalted"?
Jesus was preaching against pride and arrogance because these are sinful attitude that block us from a place in salvation. Jesus wanted us to be humble because this is an essential attitude for salvation. In Ephesians 2:4&5 and 2:8&9 we are told that it is by grace through our faith that we can be saved and this is so that we will not boast. So from this verse it is clear that Jesus wanted us to be humble and he showed us the example by washing his disciples' feet.

What does Jesus mean that "Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled and whoever humbles himself will be exalted"?
Anyone who tries to 'put him/herself forward' will discover that they are going to get push-ed back, either by others or circumstances, but those who out of deference for others, and are not trying to 'get ahead' of everyone else, eventually find that both others and cir-cumstances 'lift them up'. God is the 'great leveler' and turns upside down what people feel they have turned right side up.
