Job Problem: How has Jesus
helped you

Great thoughts everyone. I’ve also had my ups and downs in my career. I manage a graphic design company and that involves working with clients and managing a team of creative people. It’s been my experience that one of the most effective strategies in your career development is to understand yourself well. Take the time to learn about personalities, management principles, team dynamics and how all of that fits your styles. Jesus demonstrated that he understood people well. When you read about his interactions with his disciples, it’s evident that he did his homework in understanding what motivates people and how to help shape people’s strengths. One thing I do is go to a personal development conference once a year plus I have a personal coach who helps me refine my professional and personal skills. It’s made a huge difference in my life.

Anxiety: How has Jesus helped
you?

I can tell you all about anxiety – I’m the poster child. But I’ve found some things that made a big different for me. I went through some Christian counseling sessions that helped me find some keys to my anxiety. When I was younger my parents struggled in their finances. I came to realize that after seeing my parents hit some really hard times that I decided that I had to take care of myself because I didn’t want to hit bottom like my parent did. I discovered that I had violated one of Jesus’ principles about not worrying. I learned that difficulties cause us to decide whether we can really trust in God’s goodness or if we are going to trust in our own abilities to get us out of it. If we trust that God really loves us, we will pray for God’s help and then wait on Him to come through for us. But, if we become anxious and fearful when facing difficult circumstances, we decide that we can’t trust in God to save us and so we take matters into our own hands. When we do that, we often react out of fear that only makes matters worse. So, what I do now is whenever I am facing something that makes me scared, I remind myself what God said. God said He is good. That He loves me. That He cares for my needs (Jesus said that God meets all of the needs of the little birds and that I matter to him much more than birds). And that he will answer my prayers if I only trust in Him and wait for Him to show us and take care of things. So, I’ve been practicing this and it’s made a huge difference in my life. I still get scared when something unexpected happens in my life but I now have tools for dealing with it and turning it all over to God and waiting on Him to help me.

Job Problem: How has Jesus
helped you

As someone in her late twenties, I don’t have tons of experience in the job market but I have learned something from studying the teachings of Jesus. I got laid off at a job I totally liked. I was down for months after. I had a hard time dealing with the way they treated me after working there for a couple of years. The reason they laid me off was because I wasn’t willing to relocate to another state. I have friends and family here in Pennsylvania and my friendships meant more to me than my job. I had to decide whether I was willing to change jobs and maybe even have a negative report in my resume contact list to prioritize my friends and family. I prayed about and talked to my pastor and several friends. I decided to put the people I love first and I have no regrets. As it turns out, I got a better job that pays more money and is a better place to work. It can be easy to get all uptight about your job and career and feel like if you make a mistake it is going to cost you for a long time. But if you ask God for wisdom and trust in him taking care of your needs, you have nothing to worry about. Life is too short to be worried about things beyond your control. I hope others join in on the conversation because I value what others have shared here.

Health-Injury: How has Jesus
helped you

Hey group, I’m enjoying reading everyone’s stuff. My husband went through a time not too long ago when he had surgery and out of work for a couple of months. Our insurance wasn’t enough to cover it and we weren’t sure that he wasn’t going to need more surgeries later. I had fears that maybe he was going to be permanently disabled to the point that he couldn’t work. You know how it is when your fears kick in and take over. Before long the mole hill becomes a mountain. When there was nothing else that I could do other than pray, I prayed. I felt a nearness to God that I hadn’t felt in a long time. I had to deal with the issue of whether God wanted my husband to be healed. When I read through the Bible during that time, I always saw that Jesus wanted to heal every person he encountered. The Bible goes on to tell us that Jesus is the exact representation of the Father. So, if Jesus was always willing to heal every person he encountered, I believe that that was what God wanted for my husband. There certainly are people who don’t get healed and I don’t understand why but I do believe God’s heart is that everyone is healed. So, I prayed believing this to be true and the doctor’s reports were nothing short of miraculous. His surgery went better than expected and he recovered and was back to work quicker than anyone expected. It was a trying time but it really served to strengthen my faith in God and the power of prayer.

Finances: How has Jesus helped
you

Oh I just love these conversations! You all have such valuable things to share. Thanks to everyone for making a difference in my life. My husband and I have had a lot of financial challenges in the last couple of years. We got caught up in all the mortgage problems plaguing our country. We lost our home and had to move into something smaller and cheaper that we are renting. I was devastated. Our credit report tanked and that caused me all kinds of sleepless nights. But just like God, he turned it all around for our good. We were able to make some changes and now we are in better shape than ever. I came to realize that I was trusting in our jobs (we both work), our home and our credit report more than we are trusting in God. Now that my world was turned upside down and we came through it and life is still good, I learned that God really does love me. God really is taking care of me. He is involved in my life. He is doing things unseen everyday. When we were in control of our life, it was hard to experience God’s goodness. But, when our lives were shaken, there was God right in the middle of it taking care of us. I learned that when I trust in God, it releases him to do miracles in my life. Now I don’t want to experience difficulty any more than necessary but I know that God works all things for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purposes.
